Tonight is Midsummer eve. Many Finns leave the cities for Midsummer and spend their holiday in the countryside, either in their cottages or at rock festivals. Rituals include bonfires, sauna and spending time together. Heavy drinking is also associated with the Finnish midsummer. In folk magic, midsummer was a very potent night and the time for many small rituals, mostly for young maidens seeking suitors and fertility. An important feature of the midsummer in Finland is the white night and the midnight sun.
Some of the most interesting folk magic spells associated with midsummer include but are not limited to: if a girl picks seven different species of flowers and places them under her pillow for the night the face of her future husband will be revealed for her in a dream, if a girl rolls around naked on a dewy field she will surely meet her future husband during the passing year, if a girl goes up to a well or a spring naked on midsummer night she will see the face of her future husband briefly reflected in the water… and so on.
